info@communityplaces.co.uk
A specialist residential service providing high standards of support, personal care and accommodation for adults aged 18 years and over who have a learning disability, autism and complex needs including behaviour that may challenge.
We offer a person centered approach, which aims to support people to develop increasing levels of independence as far as this is possible and for each person to achieve a higher quality of life.
We offer opportunities to learn new skills, become more independent and try new experiences. We encourage individuals to be active members of the community including using local shops and cafes on a regular basis, looking for volunteering opportunities, working on our community allotment project and accessing courses at local colleges and libraries.
We offer more than somewhere to live, we are offering somewhere to make a home. We ensure individuals are included in all decisions about their care and support, either directly or through carers, family or advocate.

Resource Centre
Community Places recognises that specialist facilities to promote adult education and recreation are limited within this geographical area, and with this in mind we had a spacious resource centre purpose built to fit this criteria. The resource centre is equipped with an IT suite, incorporating a Wii console and Blueray player, and a Cinema.
The service provides thirteen ensuite bedrooms, separate sensory bathroom, one large lounge and three smaller lounges which are used for DVDs, games, quiet time. Residents also can access the resource centre which has a adapted kitchen, sensory room and a multi media kit.
There is Wi-Fi throughout allowing service users to stay in touch with family and friends, access e-learning and use the internet. The service has its own garden areas including a sensory garden and sunken trampoline.
There is also a one bedroom self-contained apartment with a separate garden area. All bedrooms have been designed to maintain a homely environment but remain robust and appropriate to the residents needs, which can be changed as needs change
John Street is situated in a residential area of Great Houghton, Barnsley and close to a wealth of community facilities including local shops, pubs and local parks. The service is close to Barnsley and has good bus and rail links to the surrounding areas
